THE SKINNY: In 1989, the seeds for what would later become an indie film boom were planted by the now classic DRUGSTORE COWBOY co-written by Daniel Yost and directed and co-written by Gus Van Sant.
Following an ill-fated, heroin-driven Bonnie and Clyde (played by Kelly Lynch and Matt Dillon) as they robbed drugstores in the Pacific Northwest to fund their drug habit, the movie is now being prepped for a proper sequel.
The yet, untitled project will revisit the characters in a modern day setting with a script already completed by Yost and based on a sequel novel he co-wrote with original DRUGSTORE writer and novelist James Fogle.'
"DRUGSTORE COWBOY has become one of the most enduring of all indies from the 1980's boom period," says producer Joel Eisenberg who will be producing the film with Timothy Owens of EMO Films pending a rights reversion to Fogle and Yost. "Typically I am as skeptical as anyone when it comes to sequels, however, writer Dan Yost has mined the source material and has really come up with a gem. I couldn't be more excited to be involved in this terrific project."
EMO Films recently executive produced the Columbine-inspired APRIL SHOWERS. Upcoming projects include a sequel to the Oscar-winning ROAD TO PERDITION and GHOULISHLY YOURS, WILLIAM M. GAINES with director John Landis.
