CLAY AIKEN RANTS ABOUT ADAM LAMBERT - THEN APOLOGIZES
The former AMERICAN IDOL contestant reveals on his blog that he is not an Lambert supporter

THE SKINNY: For such a seemingly harmless celebrity, Clay Aiken is sure getting himself into some hot water these days.
The former AMERICAN IDOL contestant took to his blog to discuss his personal opinions about the latest season, only to find out that what a backlash a negative view of fan favorite Adam Lambert could bring.
In an entry written on May 21, Aiken wrote:
"Now that it's all over, and for the record.... I couldn't be happier about the way AI ended this year. I only turn the show on once a season, and only to see what the set looks like each year. This year, I happened to turn it during the minute that Adam Lambert was singing 'Ring of Fire' and, at that moment, thought my ears would bleed. Contrived, awful, and slightly frightening! I wasn't really a fan and found myself surprised whenever folks told me that they liked him. Granted, I never saw another performance (and many folks who I trust said that he was great) but I can't imagine I would have enjoyed it. Just not my cup of tea at all. To each his own. I never saw Kris sing on the show, but whether he was good or not is really relative. It's usually a matter of taste, right? But Idol is not always a matter of musical taste only. It's about the person you like. From what little I saw, Kris seemed likable. (That's not to say that Adam isn't just as likable as anyone.. maybe more so... I don't know) When Ruben and I were standing next to each other every night (many years ago) you had two equally talented, equally unlikely, equally unpolished contestants.... so it really was a matter of taste as to who was voted for. While some may argue that one of us was hyped more than the other, I don't feel that was the case. However, this year, there was an obvious bias. Not even having watched the show, I can tell you that I was WELL aware of the bias from the judges as to who should win. In my opinion, that is awfully unattractive. I don't think I am alone."
Despite Aiken's emphasis on the fact that he was just offering his take on things as an answer to a fan's question, the singer was forced into later issuing an apology. He graciously took to his blog again, this time writing:
"I am sure that some were upset by my choice of words describing my opinion of a performance I heard from Adam Lambert. I hope no one actually believed that blood truly poured forth from my ears when I heard him. I obviously meant it as a colorful statement to imply that I did not enjoy what I heard. Any performer hopes that their music will appeal to all people, but no singer realistically expects it to. God knows, I am SURE there are PLENTY of people who can't stand to hear me sing either. I wouldn't dream of assuming that, and I am sure that far worse things have been said about my performances than I would even venture to type here. To me, that's fine. I don't expect unanimous, nor even majority support for my music. But, my guess is Adam doesn't either. I would not venture to make judgements on the personality or demeanor of anyone I don't know, so none of what I said in my previous blog was directed as a "slam" on Adam as a person. At the same time, I wouldn't dream of slamming him as an entertainer. He does what he does, because he enjoys it, and he obviously has many fans who enjoy it as well. If what i said in my previous blog regarding my impression of a single performance from Adam upset or offended any of his fans, I expect that the mature ones will realize that it was simply a poorly worded metaphor describing my personal tastes. The only person I would really dream of apologizing to is Adam. And the irony is, if he's smart he couldn't give a crap what I think of his Ring of Fire performance. As an entertainer, Adam knows that one person's opinion of one performance really matters a little less than zero, in the grand scheme of things. He could not have gotten on Idol (nor made it as far as he did) without an immense amount of talent. He surely doesn't need my approval to know he has a gift. At the same time, he realizes that amazing talent doesn't always equal universal appeal. (I could NEVER have the amount of skill and talent that ballet dancers have! that's talent! But, I don't particularly enjoy it!) I am sure that I will have plenty of opportunities in the coming years to hear Adam sing. I imagine he'll be around for years to come. But in the meantime, I definitely don't want to stoop to the level of so many negative freaks on the internet... so, I do apologize to Adam for my colorful (and negative) choice of words. I hope he can forgive me. I imagine he doesn't give a damn! :-) God knows he shouldn't. :-)"
To be honest, I rather enjoy this new, sassier Aiken. Shows that the AI machine can crank out more than just the usual bland popstar.

Where is the love here? Clay blog it on his fan site and those who hated him took a chance to paste it around media. The lesson here is for Clay to be careful to what he says and keep the negative comment to himself. It is just an opinion folks and don't take it personally. Let us focus on what the two can give us with there respective future projects. Adam is talented and so as Clay. I think even though they have different styles if you just focus on the "voice" they both have the "gift". I love both of them.

Clay has ALWAYS been "sassy," haha. Interesting guy and the quintessential entertainer (which fans know, the weird tabloid-media not so much.) (Think Spamalot as a performance choice...) Anyway, not surprised he'd express an opinion, and not surprised he'd apologize if that opinion was taken out of context and misconstrued. He's a good guy (just ask Mike Nichols, Eric Idle, or anyone who actually knows Clay or has worked with him in a professional capacity. Not to mention UNICEF and other organizations he's worked with and for.)

Sorry, Suz, Clay's been with a gorgeous dancer/model who's way hotter than Adam for the past year. In fact, Clay wrote his blog from France where his boyfriend is touring right now. Every gay person isn't attracted to every other gay person, just like every straight person isn't attracted to every other straight person. I understand why Adam's fans would be miffed at someone posting a criticism of their favorite, but I don't understand the over-the-top hatred directed at Clay that I've seen over the weekend, calling into question his character, insulting his child, vowing to destroy his career... just because he posted his opinion on ONE performance of Adam's in answer to a fan question. A performance, I might add, that overwhelmingly from the public & judges, was deemed his worst. The Adam fans better watch out because they're quickly developing a horrible reputation on the internet for attacking anyone who doesn't worship their goth Idol. Kinda scary.

I think the whole thing has been blown way out of proportion. Clay anwered a question on his fansite, it was taken out of context, and all hell broke loose. He's entitled to an opinion, and I just happen to think his opinion was right on both of his points.
When all is said and done........Clay Aiken seems like a nice guy, great performer. Adam Lambert seems like a nice guy, great performer. There are more important things in the world to think about. 'Nuff said.

Seems to me this has all been blown way out of proportion. The meat of the whole thing was actually about how AI has changed over the past few years. No longer are the contestants the guys and gals working as waiters or teachers or students trying to do something with their music as best they can - and AI gave them a break. The last couple of years (especially sinced they raised the age to 29) has been filled with many fairly professional people as contestants. And I include Adam, and Carly from last year, in that group. Yes, they are talented. But no way would I vote for either of them. I liked AI the way it was originally premised to be. This year, for the first time, I actually did not watch or tape each show. The bias of the judges toward Adam was nauseating; and it sure seems close to "illegal" to have let Adam have a solo cover on a major entertainment magazine DURING the competition.
I wish both men well and good careers. But as to AI, if they do not go back to the way it was in the early years, they've lost me as a viewer. Though I may not have agreed with Clay's evaluation of Adam, I do agree with his comments about AI 100 percent!

How sad that Clay Aiken has been the media whipping boy for so many years making it perfectly acceptable to bash him for anything & everything he does & says, including by other music stars, some from Idol. (When did any of them ever apologize to him, btw?) But whoa, let Clay give an opinion about someone else's performance & stop the presses! How dare he think he can criticize anyone when the law of America is you can only criticize Clay Aiken & not vice versa. What a sick society this is.

Will, FYI, Clay has a whole boardful of male internet fans - get a clue. Men like good singing, too, idiot. I happen to be one of them. Don't give a crap about Adam or American Idol, so Clay's opinion is nothing to me except his opinion. We all have one and have a right to express it. That's what Adam fans don't get, apparently.

That story about Clay stopping by the Idol studios to try to meet Adam is a lie. It did not happen. Clay made that clear when he said they have different styles. Clay didn't need to apologize, but he is classy and did so. Clay has been bashed and slammed by people all over the Internet for years and has taken it without complaint. Well, I'm sick of it. I like it when Clay expresses his opinion and lets the chips fall where they may. Say it, Clay.

Clay's blog was in answer to a fan question on his private fan club. It was not meant for public viewing. He has a right to his opinion. I prefer the "colorful" language he used. He called it like he sees it. He didn't say anything many haven't been thinking. If Adam fans are this upset already over this, they are in for a rough ride when the honeymoon is over with the media.

I read on Clay's fan board that there almost 6,000 articles concerning his blog/answer and his opinion about one song by another AI contestant.
Where are those same articles when Clay is visiting dangerous countries and blogging for UNICEF?
Can you just imagiane that if UNICEF had only $1.00 for each of those articles how many mosquito bed nets they could buy, or how many vaccines they could buy to save one child, or how much food to save one child from starving?
I find it a very sad commentary on what peoples' priorities are in this country.
And to take it one step further, what if EVERY one who posts a hateful comment about Clay Aiken in these 6,000 articles, took the time to send THEIR $1.00 to either UNICEF or a charity of their choice. Think how much good could be accomplished because of this one man - Clay Aiken.
I am proud of this man and I am proud to call myself his fan.

My opinion of that performance was exactly the same as Clay's.. Awful.... Clay is a classy guy, and he really didn't need to give an apology to Adam....He has every right to his opinion...God knows, people sure don't mind giving their opinion about Clay...

Clay gives an opinion how he didn't like Adam's rendition of ROF, saying about the same thing as Simon and Randy did. Over the past years Clay has been called every negative, demeaning word the media, haters, and griefers could come up with. Where was the outrage?
As Clay said Adam may be a very likeable guy and he's talented no doubt, but this has been made into a firestorm that is ridiculous. A word to the Adam fans, be careful and don't let the haters and stalkers take over on the net. It's he** out there.

So Adam & Kris are wonderful people because they are still friends? Guess what - Clay & Ruben are still the closest friends 6 years later. So Adam was gracious in defeat? Guess what - so was Clay in a major way. He pimped Ruben & Kimberley Locke to his fans for years. If you bother to do any research on Clay, you'd see that he's a good person with a huge heart for children. He uses his fame for all kinds of charitable causes, often to the detriment of his own career & even was doing it way before he became a star. When Adam does that, let's talk. In the meantime, stop with all the drama because someone you never liked to begin with doesn't care for ONE PERFORMANCE (universally accepted as his WORST performance) from your Idol. Get over it, children.

Here's an interesting Clay story from a board that has nothing to do with him: "Late this afternoon I fell into an enormous pothole while making a turn off one of the local highways. Unfortunately it blew out my front tire. As I slowly inched the car onto the shoulder with my emergency signals on, another car was following me slowly. It pulled in front of me once I stopped, then got back on the road, drove to a spot it could turn around and came back. We didn't pay much attention and just got on the phone to AAA. To my surprise the car drove up next to us and down came it's window. The driver asked if we were okay and if we needed help. I told him what happened, saying we were already on the phone with AAA, and thanked him for stopping. He looked and sounded familiar and when I took off my sunglasses to get a better look I was pretty sure who I was talking to. I said, "Aren't you Clay?" He replied "yes" with a bit of a sigh in his voice. I thanked him again, telling him how nice it was of him to stop to see if we needed help. Yep, it was Clay Aiken folks! When the tow truck guy came we were telling him the story and at first he thought we were pulling his leg, but then got really excited and said how cool it was. I'm still bummed about the tire and what the repair is going to cost, especially if I find out there's any damage to the rim or axle, but refreshed by the kindness of this local celebrity! Pretty nice of Clay to offer his help when most ordinary people would just drive on by, wouldn't you say? Thanks, Clay, for being such a good guy!" There are hundreds of stories exactly like this over the years about Clay's good heart, helping people when he didn't need to, advocating for children all over the world. The media only enjoys the ones they can twist to make him look bad. I don't know how such a sweet person became a national whipping boy, but it is wrong on all levels. Leave Clay alone & let him have his right to an opinion on any topic. Adam & Clay's longtime boyfriend Reed are friends from their days in WICKED, so it's ridiculous to think that Clay would bash Adam personally. Give him & me a break!

Yeah, The AI judges pimped Adam as the winner every week from the get go. That was pretty insulting to the rest of the singers in competition. Too bad he doesn't get the coverage when he takes the trips for UNICEF or works with his successful foundation.
Thanks for this reasonable article.

You know what I like about Clay Aiken? He has the balls to tell it like it is. AI is exactly how he describes it now days. So he didn't like the rendition of ring of fire, nobody I know did either and they were insulted for Johnny Cash. Clay is an interesting guy and it's cool that he answers questions for his fans.

I like this sassier Clay Aiken also.
He is entitled to his opinion as well as anyone else.
I agree - he is very interesting and quite intelligent.
He has opened a question and answer thread on the board and visit often to answer them. This is how that blog came to be.

Thanks for giving the first rational commentary on the situation that I've seen. I also appreciate Clay's insightful thoughts on the AI PR machine & how they try to influence the vote with their chosen one. That is what the blog was about, not Adam. But a few words about RING OF FIRE were taken out of context & passed all over the net for Adam's rapid fans to piss on. If you're not in lockstep with them, you're the devil (see Monica below). Also, why is Clay the only one not allowed to have an opinion. Elliott Yamin this week said that Kris Allen is bland, not an artist & didn't deserve to win. Where is the outrage on that one??? Why aren't Adam's fans vowing to destroy his career, hmmm? Lastly, for 6 years people have been bashing Clay's performances, even some former Idols & fellow artists. Not a single one of them have ever apologized to him. Again, where is the outrage?

I don't think he needs to "crawl back into his hole". What would this country be if we weren't allowed to express an opinion that is different from another's? I certainly don't wish to stifle someone's rights to express themselves, especially in something so diverse as musical opinion. Sheesh. It's not like he's making law or something, where many are affected and must follow that rule. It's just an opinion.
Go on with yer badself, Mr. Aiken.:-)

Our house was split on the Adam/Kris vote. "Bleeding ears" would have been a compliment compared to what my brothers thought of him each week. Mom and I disagree. Every one is entitled to an opinion. Aiken comes across as a very interesting guy.

Clay Aiken is entitled to his opinion and I give him props for apologizing to Adam for a poor choice of words. After reading his statement though, I watched Adam's performance of the song and agree with Clay...would not make me want to hear anything else by Adam. Simon's critique was FAR worse. Clay's opinion was in response to a question posed to him by a fan so it wasn't unsolicited and it was on a private site. Clay has opinions on many topics that he shares with fans. The guy is smart and pulls few punches. An interesting guy.
