THE SKINNY: Sometimes a song on a TV show takes on a life of its own, and that’s the case with "Can’t Go Home Again," the featured tune in "The 12-Step Job" episode of LEVERAGE – Season 1.
"The purpose of the song was to help establish the character of Jack Hurley [Drew Powell] as this overgrown kid with a drinking problem," says Executive Producer/Co-Creator Chris Downey. "Our composer Joe LoDuca absolutely hit it out of the park. The song was this jolt of energy that told you everything you needed to know about the character in about twenty seconds. And it’s catchy as hell. "
Of course, the desire for a Pogues/Flogging Molly tune ended up being so spot on, it caused confusion with the fans out there.
"When the show originally aired, people thought the song was a Floggin’ Molly song," says Executive Producer/Director Dean Devlin. "In fact, it was inspired by Floggin’ Molly, but it was an original song written by Joe LoDuca."
Adds Supervising Producer Amy Berg "It's exactly what we were looking for," she says. "But confusion set in when fans hit their mute buttons in an attempt to figure out what the song was. Unfortunately, the people who do our closed-captioning took the script a little too literally and typed in lyrics from an actual Flogging Molly song. But the on-screen lyrics didn't match up with the words they were hearing, obviously. Hence the confusion."
In fact Executive Producer/Co-Creator John Rogers was also perplexed when he first heard the song as well.
"Much to my wife's chagrin, I actually listen to Irish bar bands, so I was pretty stunned when Joe sent the track , and I spent half an hour trying to figure out what Dublin group we'd licensed it from," says Rogers.
So without further ado, here’s the internet premiere of Joe LoDuca’s "Can’t Go Home Again" from LEVERAGE's "The 12-Step Job."
