THE SKINNY: Cable, crime and continuity: Showtime Networks announced that it is renewing two series, both dark comedies with serial premises that would never fly on network television. WEEDS is a half-hour show, currently in its second season, starring Mary-Louise Parker, who won an Emmy for her performance as a suburban widowed mom who makes a living dealing marijuana to her neighbors.
The hour-long DEXTER stars Michael C. Hall (formerly of HBO’s SIX FEET UNDER) as a blood-splatter expert for the Miami Police Department, who has a secret life as a serial killer – fortunately for ordinary folks, Dexter has been taught by his now-deceased foster father to focus his energies on targeting only other serial killers. DEXTER, now in its first year, has been picked up for a second, while WEEDS, now in its sophomore session, has been picked up for a third go-round.
