THE SKINNY: Twenty-seven seconds of eye goo is the only addition to the upcoming HOSTEL unrated DVD according to director Eli Roth but that should be enough to get horror fans to pick up that DVD edition of HOSTEL on April 18th. If that wasn’t enough, Roth is hard at work on a script for the sequel of the film due out early next year. iF MAGAZINE took time out the busy directors day, and he told us about HOSTEL 2, Stephen King’s CELL, and other projects he may or may not do.
ELI ROTH: 27 seconds of eye goo. Let’s demystify the process right now. Everything I wanted to get, I got by the ratings board and the studio wanted to know how they were going to do an unrated edition. We added extra eye goo, and made it unrated. There wasn’t lots of extra horrific footage that we shot, so the movie is pretty much the movie with 27 seconds of eye goo.
iF: What can you tell us about HOSTEL 2?
ROTH: SAW 2 was a big inspiration, they stepped it up and it was a fun sequel. I decided I better do HOSTEL 2 right now, while it’s fresh in my mind. It’s kind of got an expiration date on it. I had an idea for the sequel that I was really excited about, and I’m working on the script right now. Unlike the first HOSTEL, this one is not going to be a family movie. This one will have some blood in it and be a little darker and more violent. I have always wanted to see a sequel where it picks up with the next shot after the first one left off. I think the sequel should start off tonally where the last one left off.
iF: After HOSTEL 2, you are directing Stephen King’s CELL?
ROTH: Right now what I’ve got is HOSTEL 2 and then CELL. The great thing about collaborating with Stephen King is once you’re doing his movie that’s it. Stephen King is pretty cool about people adapting his work and not getting too precious over it. He really liked HOSTEL and approved of me. I’d love to put him in as a cameo if he’s available for it. There’s certainly room for it, but he’d have to get killed in some horrible way.
iF: What about your project, THE BOX?
ROTH: That is something Richard Kelly and I have been working on for a while. I’d love to do it, but Rich is busy with SOUTHLAND TALES, and I’ve been busy on HOSTEL 1 and 2. One of these days, when the time is right we’ll do that film together.
For the full interview with Roth, be sure to check back close to the release of HOSTEL on DVD next month, right here at iF MAGAZINE.

how old are you guys? like 10? whats with the name calling. anyways on the REAL subject. I thought hostel was great(probly because im a sick weirdo), i liked the atmosphere and the gore was pretty brutal. but yeah the script wasnt the greatest and neither was the acting. there was real potential for the movie really shand the plot(whitch was a good concept but was extremely shallow). i think the idea in itself of rich bastards payin money to snuff out coeds is scary. i wouldnt say he has no talent, thats a little harsh, but i agree the plot should have been more deep. mabe the loose ends will be tied up in the sequel and mabe eli will squeeze some story in between the carnage. i think instead of tryin to do what saw did he should take some time to work out the kinks and add more depth. Also he should actually co-direct with tarintino on the next one instead of just tacking his name on it.i hope he's right about the sequel making the first one look like a "family film". i hope its so intense thats it gets banned. mabe he should team with mel gibson he's a pretty sadistic fuck too. any one see the passion?

Eli Roth has some great talent but i feel he never gets what he wants onto screen. He has excellant filmography which makes you cringe with fear and laugh with tears. I just wish he controlled his own projects from start to finish which would enable him to get only his idea on screen. As for wholes in scripts give the guy a break he's new to the game, and with one fianl word increase your film budget. Example in hostel torture scence's are great not big budget but filmed well enough for realism, then it get's ruined with dolls getting run over near end which looked extremly cheap and nasty. All in all Eli Roth will become a world famous director to all over the coming years. Keep up the excellant work.

I have no talent so I have to downgrade others who do. I don't know why I watch Eli Roth movies if I don't like gore and cheap laughs except that I'm secretly in love with him and wish I could be like him. Maybe someday I'll be half a man and be able to tell the difference between what's good and what's bad.

Eli Roth is a double edged sword.. Cabin Fever and Hostel had some originality to them.. but i dun think he ended up making what he wanted to make. Both are good efforts, but i am not fond of either one.. though months later i crave to see the movies again.. just to see why. So yea.. i think he's a talented director.. but he NEEDS to learn how to tighten his scripts and STOP going for those cheap laughs that seem to just totally disrupt his films.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the man doesn't have ANY talent--but extreme gore, combined with a script that had more holes in it than Swiss cheese, doesn't necessarily make for a good time. I love the way he is already trying to entice potential viewers with the statement "the second one won't be a family movie." I got news for you, Mr. Roth, neither was the first.

This man has "NO-Talent"! Hostel was just a bunch of gore with just a minor story between the murders!
