Movie News: GORE VERBINSKI OFFERS SCOOP ON BACK-TO-BACK PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN SEQUELS

The director of THE WEATHER MAN has been very busy bringing back Johnny Depp as pirate Jack Sparrow

THE SKINNY: Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean) was out promoting his new Nicolas Cage dramedy THE WEATHER MAN when he revealed his plans for the two back-to-back PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN sequels starring Johnny Depp which are currently in production.

"I'm a quarter of the way through the third one and three quarters of the way through the second one," says Verbinski. "It's madness."

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN : DEAD MAN’S CHEST is due out July 7, 2006 with Depp returning as Jack Sparrow. Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and Geoffrey Rush also return. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3 will arrive in 2007. Although the movies are shot back-to-back, Verbinski reveals they’re shooting both films simultaneously with both scripts constantly in flux.

"We're shooting scenes in the third movie without even knowing what the hell we're doing," laughs Verbinski. "We actually have a pretty good second script and the third script is still on the operating table. And we're in triage constantly, everyday. I don't recommend making two movies at once. I think that we're going to get there, but it's just madness. You're like building ships and the ships aren't ready and you have four hundred extras. There's a lot of fun and I think that the second movie is strong and clever and has a lot going on. The third movie we're still working on."

Verbinski did discuss shooting back-to-back movies with director Peter Jackson who did three films at once with his LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and he did have one bit of advice.

"I did talk to Peter Jackson about it and he said, 'Re-shoots,’" says Verbinski who adds that might not be a luxury the PIRATES sequels will have. "We don't have time for re-shoots. We don't have the time."

And while Johnny Depp stole the show in the original PIRATES film, Verbinski reveals that they’ve been very cautious not to make it solely the "Jack Sparrow Movie."

"It's tricky," says Verbinski. "You can't just phone that in. We actually have a story that's challenging and compelling and dangerous and he's still the character that gets to weave his way through that story and affect everyone else with his own agenda. But you don't want to make the mistake of going, 'Well, they loved Johnny Depp. Put him in every scene.' You'd then kind of wear that out. You need a very unique take."

So does that mean Sparrow is a glorified supporting player?

"Supporting?" Verbinski says. "No, I think that he is carrying the movie."

The rumor of Keith Richards playing Depp’s dad in the film is still, only a rumor, but it’s something the director would like to make happen.

"We hope so," he says. "We're trying to work out his dates. We all want it to work, but it's his tour dates and his lawyers."

What Verbinski finds the most surprising is the way audiences embraced Depp’s character so much in the first film, which is the one thing that made Disney so nervous initially.

"I knew we had a fun movie that was going to make it's money back, but the exponential factor was Johnny's performance and that character was what they were so nervous about," says the director.

And how will the PIRATES movies be different from the original?

"Jack is back," says Verbinski. "It'll be different enough that there will be a lot of stuff that will be fresh and that you don't expect and it will be familiar enough that all of your favorites are back, but the stories are different."

I enjoyed the first Pir rets of the Caribbean much better than the second One. I'm highly disapointed in Disney's decision not to include Zoe in any of the secquals. Perhpas Kaira didn't like the compitition since deep down she really does have a thing for Captain Jack Sparrow

I think both the movies were GREAT...but the second one had a tiny bit too much action in, though it was hilarious. (sorry i'm annoyingly romantic). I agree that Anamaria was great and she should have been in the sequal, or hopefully the third one. i want to know where and why she's gone! She and Jack would have been a great couple. i like Tia Dalma too, though. Maybe she will bring Jack back to life once Barbossa and Will and Elizabeth have found him!

I went into shock when Jack got eaten. I think he is a great character alongside Anamaria. I think she should have been in the sequels, or there should be an explaination to due with her lack of apperance. I have to say, Tia Dalma is an awesome character and can't wait to see her use her witchcraft powers in the third one. I love the films and don't want them to ever end!

I'm devastated that Cap'n Jack Sparrow died! I heard a rumor that Johnny Depp wouldnt be able to play the next one. But I'm a little lost anyways.. is that true? I just hope he's in the third one, it wouldnt be that same obviously, and it would be a little confusing if they went to the end of the world and didnt get Jack back.. yikes!

I'm a little sad about the death of Jack. I hope that Anamaria is in the third one at least. I thoought that Jack and her would be together and it would be nice to have him like a woman of color

I can't believe that Jack is getting killed by Davey Jones' pet Kraken - especially when the Kraken is Posiedon's! I just hope that this witch doctor I've read about can restore his life in the third movie when Will goes to the end of the world to save Jack's soul. P.S. I am in premature morning for the death of Cap'n Jack. What a great man!

These sound like they will both be interesting sequels to the original "Pirates of the Caribbean" film. Personally, I also agree that Captain Jack Sparrow carried a good load of the movie, but it's all right! He's one of my favorite characters! I'm very glad that I found this wonderful sight because it provides terrific information that I couldn't really find anywhere else. But, one thing that myself and many others have agreed upon, is that Anamaria (Zoe Saldana) really should be in both sequels. Although she did not have a huge line, many "Pirate" fans have fallen deeply in love with that one particular character, and we would desperately love to see more of our fearsome pirate lass. Thanks! Also, I hope Keith Richards will play Jack's dad, I'd really like to see a "father/son" moment between the two of them. That would be awesome! So...yeah. The movie is amazing, the sequels sound wonderful, and I'm extremely gloomy that Anamaria will not be in "Pirates of the Caribbean Two: Dead Man's Chest".

It was nice to hear some thing's that going on with making of POTC 2/3, im sure the director's knows what they our doing, in the sense that they dont, which will make the film's also much better to watch when they our released. As all people go on journeys that they sometimes lose sight off tying ends up, but in the end you find that it a hit in the making. How do you work that one out?, but it so true. I hear that it's surpose to have more comedy scene's in the second/third POTC, which is great to hear not that in part's of first POTC it had it's moments that people could be amused too. Im pleased that Johnny also had his time too play Jack again, as we all know he loves this character, which has now taken him three times over now third time lucky sort of thing going on :) and it would be good if Keith Richards can make the plot that the film has for him, in and around his touring of Rolling Stones concert's. I wish to add all best to cast and crew and looking forward to our pirate journey, cos we all need abit of a pirates life ;).
