After making THE HITCHER actor Sean Bean would be too scared to pick up any hitchhiker, and who could blame him? Bean takes the place of Rutger Hauer as homicidal hitchhiker John Ryder in the latest Hollywood horror movie remake who picks a young couple to terrorize and ultimately frame for grisly acts he has committed.
Bean who has been tempted by the power of the one ring in LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWHIP OF THE RING talked with iF MAGAZINE about the challenges of being cast in a re-make and what it takes to play a really bad guy.
iF MAGAZINE: How does one get into this iconic remake and what did you bring to this role?
SEAN BEAN: I had seen the original years ago and I was so impressed by it. And so I was approached for this role and had many reservations. But I totally got into this new version done by Dave. Also I had worked with Michael Bay before (note: The Island) and I was convinced there was a great movie to be made. I think Michael bring a fresh outlook to projects. And I knew I could create a great character for The Hitcher, especially because I was totally free to come up with my own interpretation since he has no real back-story to him. Sometimes it’s a negative not to have details on a role you’re trying to play but here it let me do what I wanted to do. And I also enjoyed playing a very bad guy.
iF: Does this bring indeed an extra sense of freedom to play a bad guy, to let all of your anger out in a way…?
BEAN: Well for sure you can do what you want, push the boundaries and that’s what people want to see. Especially for this type of film but also because in these days and age everything is so politically boring and correct! People want the envelope to be pushed.
iF: Have you ever picked up a hitchhiker or do some hitchhiking yourself?
BEAN: I don’t think I could do it because I’d be so scared of it. I think this would quite a dangerous situation walking down the freeway, anywhere. Especially the way some people drive. I never picked up anyone; I’d rather enjoy driving on my own.
iF: What has been your worse road trip in a car ever?

Clumsy Balrog from Canada sez....
Usually I don't watch these types of movies, not because they spook me but it's always the same: a maniac, the boyfriend acting tough and the girlfriend screams in all the scenes...few dialogue, alot of cursing. Poor casting maybe? But if Sean Bean is in it, I might give it a try! Great actor he is with intensity so it might be good! Especially if Sean plays a bit with his character...one wonders how far will he push the limits?
