At the Los Angeles premiere of THE TRIANGLE, Singer gave iF the scoop on all his upcoming projects

TRIANGLE, which airs on the Sci Fi Channel December 5th through 7th, is the brainchild of multi-talented film wizards Bryan Singer (X-MEN, SUPERMAN RETURNS) and Dean Devlin (STARGATE, INDEPENDECE DAY). The spectacular three-part mini-series features over 850 visual effects shots, boasts an A-List cast, has a story that is grounded in documented mysteries about the Bermuda Triangle, and is part fantastical science fiction adventure. iF MAGAZINE caught up with Singer at the premiere in Los Angeles and got to pick his brain not only about TRIANGLE, but also about his much anticipated SUPERMAN RETURNS movie, and exactly how he feels about not being a part of X-MEN 3. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IF MAGAZINE: How did you go about the creation process of writing TRIANGLE? BRYAN SINGER: Dean and I have been friends for years, and we were looking for something to do together. He had an idea for the opening sequence, the sequence involving the whale hunting, which he had written for something else. He told it to me, we started talking, and he said why don’t we make a series about the Bermuda Triangle for the Sci-Fi Channel and I said that sounds great let’s do that. We compiled a lot of research on the Bermuda Triangle, and from that research we began crafting a story, and we brought Rockne O’Bannon in to write the script with us and off we went. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iF MAGAZINE: Are you still flying back and forth between here and Australia for filming on SUPERMAN? BRYAN SINGER: We’re here [in Los Angeles]. Everything is done and we’re back. I took a brief hiatus, and cut together a version of the movie. Then I went back and filled in the dots, and I’m now back. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iF MAGAZINE: Are you pleased with the cut of the film you created? SINGER: Oh yeah! I am very pleased with the cut. I’ve got a nice cut of the picture. It’ll be a very funny romantic type of picture, more so than I have ever made before. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iF MAGAZINE: Comic Con in San Diego added a lot of fan interest to the upcoming release, how did you feel about showing clips so early? SINGER: If it was any other film, I don’t know if I would’ve made the trip, but it’s Comic Con and it’s SUPERMAN and I love going there. I love interacting as much as possible with fans on such a short schedule. Though it wasn’t really an action piece, I was really excited to show it; to just show a few images that I could gather up. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iF MAGAZINE: How much of the original John Williams theme will you be using in SUPERMAN RETURNS? SINGER: There will be elements of the John Williams theme, and the opening title sequence should be very similar, if not specifically the John Williams theme. The movie is very involved and there are a lot of elements we haven’t seen before, so it will have a great deal of original score as well, but I certainly will use the John Williams theme. It’s like STAR WARS, you don’t want to escape it, you want to use it and it’s one of the driving elements of the experience. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iF MAGAZINE: Are you still using the Jor-El Marlon Brando scenes in your movie? SINGER: There are elements of those scenes that I am using. There are elements of Marlon Brando, both his voice and his likeness that I am using in a certain way. Jor-El, though he is not alive, he exists in the face and voice of Marlon Brando. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iF MAGAZINE: Even though you aren’t directing X-MEN 3, have you had any insight as to how the movie is progressing? SINGER: I’ve talked with the director, he’s a good friend of mine. Brett Ratner and I’ve spent some time with the actors and they sound really positive about it. I’m looking forward to it, but I just got back from Australia. It’s weird not being part of it; I wish I could split myself in two and be in two places at one time. All of those folks are really good friends. Hugh Jackman visited us while we were shooting SUPERMAN in Sydney, and I had lunch with Wolverine and Superman -- it was kind of fun. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- iF MAGAZINE: Do you know how much of the story you were heading towards at the end of X2 that’s being used in X-MEN 3? SINGER: There are elements that sounded familiar, and some elements sounded different, but I’m not enormously knowledgeable about the whole story. It’s to be expected. There’s a certain evolution that would seem natural to go where the first two films left you. The Dark Phoenix was part of it; you see it hovering in the water in the end.
