Exclusive: TIM MINEAR GIVES THE SCOOP ON THE DEMISE OF THE INSIDE - PART 1
The creator discusses his underrated crime thriller on Fox and how dancing did his show in
By CARL CORTEZ, Contributing Editor

What began life as an article on bringing attention to the final six episodes of Fox’s riveting yet barely promoted summer crime thriller THE INSIDE, has sadly turned into a bit of a post-mortem. The show’s co-creator Tim Minear granted iF MAGAZINE an exclusive interview to discuss the status of the show and the remaining episodes of the series which follows newbie FBI agent Rebecca Locke (Rachel Nichols) who is assigned to L.A.’s violent crimes unit headed by Virgil Webster aka “Web” (Peter Coyote). Think SILENCE OF THE LAMBS mixed with the ambient moodiness of director Michael Mann’s Los Angeles based movies (HEAT, THIEF), as the unique series was originally intended for a midseason berth before being pushed to the dead of the summer where it just might have found an audience – if it weren’t for being scheduled opposite ABC’s juggernaut DANCING WITH THE STARS. Now the series is being pre-empted on Fox tonight by what was supposed to be THE INSIDE’s new lead-in SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE? which was expanded to 90 minutes this week. Now the big mystery is what will happen to the remaining episodes of the series. Will they air? Will fans have to wait for the DVD to finish off this 13-episode arc? And is the show officially cancelled? Minear sheds some light on the subject in Part 1 of our conversation. iF MAGAZINE: What happens now that you were preempted for another week? MINEAR: Out of the six remaining episodes, as of last week, we were only going to have to pull one episode out of rotation. Since, the dance show did so well, last week, they wanted to do a 90-minute one tonight. Now two would be out of rotation. To be honest, I feel like I was told two would not air, but my prediction is it will be anywhere between five or six of the remaining episodes will not air. If one does air, I predict it will be the last one. iF MAGAZINE: What episode will that be? MINEAR: If they air another one, the next episode that will air is “Aidan.” I’m really excited for people to see that episode. I think it’s a great example of what this show does best, which is to take a very interesting villain, with a very interesting psychology and to have a crime story that is a metaphor for the emotional arcs of one of our main characters. iF MAGAZINE: How does it feel to have your ass kicked by ABC’s dancing show? MINEAR: It’s typical. We would have been better if we were on Friday nights. Again, that’s just one more element that goes into it. Who could have predicted we would be up against something that would have been considered AMERICAN IDOL numbers, even if it were on in the fall. We were up against a juggernaut and the network was not willing to double pump us on a Friday night or another night. And then, they kept telling me, “ABC’s dancing show ends five weeks into your run, this show ends and we have a show called SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.” We would be pre-empted the first night it was on and then the following week, that would be our new lead-in. So they kept telling me, “that’s when we’re really going to see how the show does,” except they didn’t wait until then because they’ve already canceled it. iF MAGAZINE: And the irony is, they didn’t even wait to see if the lead-in would have helped. MINEAR: We thought we were going to be killed by that dance show on ABC. We were killed by that dance show on Fox. Fox kept referring to their dance show as “the cavalry” – “it’s on its way and you’re going to have this great lead-in.” The cavalry got there, but it killed us. iF MAGAZINE: So, are you canceled? MINEAR: They haven’t told me officially that we’re cancelled. That’s just a bunch of hoo-ha anyhow, because they told me they weren’t picking up the cast options and I’ve heard a rumor Rachel [Nichols] already has another show. iF MAGAZINE: In some ways, this show could have turned into the next HOUSE for Fox if they allowed it to build like HOUSE did last fall. MINEAR: We could have become HOUSE. I believe we are not dissimilar to HOUSE. The reviews have been really mixed and the one’s that have been really negative, they go into it saying “Oh, they’re trying to be C.S.I. and they start talking about sh*t that’s not even on the show. “Oh, this excessive gore!” The subject matter is really grim, don’t get me wrong, but C.S.I. is far more graphic than this show. Not to say, this show is not graphic. It’s graphic for a network show that runs at 9:00 p.m. at night and it has all kinds of warnings all over the place, but the people who love the show are really seeing what we’re trying to do, which is not in fact a procedural in the sense of “bag it, send it to the lab.” We don’t know anything about that. I wouldn’t know how to write C.S.I. or LAW AND ORDER or any of that sort of stuff. Those guys are wicked good at what they do, and what I do is something else. I write about characters with all kinds of moral crises and moral ambiguities. I generally write about people who could go one way or another. iF MAGAZINE: You’ve said previously, in the era of DVD, you treat the first order of each series you work as one complete arc so if the show isn’t picked up, there is at least a conclusion that satisfies fans. Did you do the same with THE INSIDE? MINEAR: We don’t go off on a cliffhanger and there is a little narrative punctuation at the end of Episode 13. Things come full circle a little bit, but there is a much deeper mythology to explore in this particular series than say WONDERFALLS. Given that everything was happening to Jaye [Caroline Dhavernas] in that series, we were in on it from the beginning and Rebecca on THE INSIDE has this past and so does everybody. There is a lot of ground we could have mined. iF MAGAZINE: Even though it’s probably still too early to reflect on the show, could you discuss how you feel about what you created with the 13 episodes of the series? MINEAR: I’m proud of the show. I was talking to someone today and we realized that when you’re doing a genre show, you already have an element of unreality to go to dark places and people tend to be willing to go there with you. When you take out that genre element, it takes away that fantasy buffer. And people don’t realize that THE INSIDE was unreal too and set in this hyper-melodramatic universe, not unlike the universe that ANGEL was located in. Granted we didn’t have vampires on the show, but it was the same kind of tone. People who were looking at it as if it were C.S.I. or procedural were missing the joke. I’m really excited for people to see the entire shape of it on DVD, because then I think they will really understand what we were trying to do with the show. Stay tuned for Part 2 of iF’s exclusive interview with Tim Minear which focuses on the creative development of THE INSIDE and what to expect from the missing unaired episodes. I am from Oman and also now am reading in English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Wigs or hairs for tongs were mentioned into the synthetic presence with rejuvenative first sorts when charles ii was designed to the protein-ligand in 1660, weaving a unrealistic wig in france."
With respect :-D, Rutha.

Well what can I say except that television has once again disappointed me by cancelling an excellent show as The Inside. I agree all these reality shows are becoming to much. I am so happy to hear that The Simple Life is history (THERE IS A TV GOD). Now all the other networks have to drop some of these other shows like SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, AMERICAN IDOL,and DANCING WITH THE STARS. To me it seems that all the networks got together and came up with the same ideas. Everyone has an alien terrorizing the world this year and CBS and NBC both see dead people with MEDIUM AND THE GHOST WHISPERER. With THE INSIDE we actually seen some kind of thinking for a good program and I think it stinks that those that enjoyed the few episodes now to enjoy the remander have to buy it on DVD. Maybe they should get rid of free television and everyone go out and buy it.

My husband & I finally had a TV show we both enjoyed watching together and one that he didn't fall asleep during. It kept us both on the edge of our seats & the ending was always a shocker! We are so sick of those other reality TV shows! I read that FOX Entertainment President Peter Liguori is taking full responsibility for the failure of the series and was quoted as saying, "I'll take the heat on how that show as scheduled. I think if I could rethink that decision, the way to have premiered that show would have been a bit earlier, right on the heels of '24's' finale, right on the heels of 'American Idol's' finale." In my book two wrongs don't make it right, he should "rethink" his 2nd decision, canceling the series, & bring it back!!!

It's not everyday that a great show like The Inside comes along. I believe the show would have made the numbers if the network would have let it run it course, or changed it's viewing night. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting sick of all these new reallity shows. These dancing reallity shows in my opinion just don't have the attraction like THE INSIDE. There are many other shows that should have been dropped before The Inside, I hope they will wake up!

Just typical... a really good show gets the shaft right when it's starting to build it's audience... I'm really pissed off, that 2 EXCELLENT shows that have been dropped really fast on me this year... THE INSIDE, and EYES :(((((((

I don't see why anyone should be surprised at all. If a show is even remotely good FOX has no clue what to do with it. Anyone out there planning on releasing a cutting edge show should go anywhere except FOX. The only thing that has any room on FOX now a days is something hackneyed or borrowed from another network. The only two exceptions on FOX are House and Family Guy, and I doubt that Family Guy will be on FOX to much longer because the numbers on it are slipping again.

I think it's a disservice for Fox to give up on a show like this before it's even had a chance to build it's audience. This is a show in the same vein as Nip/Tuck. I say that because it's a show that can build it's audience by word of mouth. I remember the first time I watched Nip/Tuck (on FX which is owned by FOX) and thought to myself- "What a great show! Imagine how many people would enjoy this show if only they knew about it." I feel the exact same way about The Inside. It would take a network like Fox to air it in the middle of the summer against a CRAZE show like "Dancing with the Stars" and give up on it so soon. Imagine if this show aired after American Idol in the fall or late fall? We wouldn't be discussing it's demise, but rather how Fox has created another successful series to go with House, and 24.

The Inside was the best show on this summer. I am so tired of FOX. Every single time they have a show that I actually like (as opposed to all the stupid "Reality" crap), it gets cancelled before it even finishes a season! The only show on Fox that has run for a season that is good is "House." I am through with FOX. ABC and the WB at least give their shows a chance! FOX has lost another viewer. What a surprise.

Oh, just tell the truth. This program didn't conform with someone's religious values and the corporate media self-censored. . . again. Now everyone, including the producer, is mouthing the usual gang of marketing excuses. Imperial China had less theocratic control than we're permitting in our so-called, 21st century democracy.

"A dancing demon? - no, something isn't right..." Something tells me that the audience for "So You Think You Can Dance" would not have 'got' the dead baby and cannibal stories to come (but it would have been funny).

I am sad to read that FOX has not renewed the actors' options, allowing Rachel Nichols to jump over to "Alias." This great show was hurt by the lackluster promotion, but also by the title-- "The Inside." What does that mean to the viewing audience at large? "CSI" makes you ask, 'what does that stand for?' "The Inside" (by the title) had me expecting an emotional, touchy-feely show along the lines of "thirtysomething" (which I also enjoyed). But I was blown away when my "Firefly"/"Buffy"-loving brother convinced me to watch. I turned my nephews (14 & 16) onto it, and they, too, said, "Now we have a MUST-SEE show to watch on Wednesdays." The show had broad appeal. "CSI" is a series about technical forensic minutiae and dazzling graphics; "The Inside" was a series about the interworkings and motivations of dark & damaged people, more akin to PBS's "Prime Suspect" series than anything I've seen recently on the big three networks. It will be sorely missed.

The inside is one of the best series on TV. I think it has all the potential to become one of the best ( and first)psychological thiller television series . It keeps you guessing I enjoy that, rather than these overrated( mind numbing) reality shows,I mean come on ,enough is enough, is everyones life so boring they have to sit and watch someone else's for entertainment. If fox was to put THE INSIDE back to back with HOUSE how could it lose of course that would make to much sense
